Sustainability Statement from Telespazio UK

As part of the Leonardo group of companies, and tenants of the Leonardo UK site at Capability Green, our efforts at Telespazio UK support those of the wider Leonardo Group and are centred on the increasingly efficient use of natural resources and a reduction in the impact of our activities, together with promotion of sustainable behaviours of our people.

Introduction

Guided by the Leonardo Group and its policies, Telespazio UK have been pursuing a path of sustainability that integrates sustainability targets into our business strategy.

Telespazio UK benefits from Leonardo UK activities to monitor the energy consumption and carbon emission footprint of all UK sites, including its subsidiaries activities closely, and follows a continuous process of incorporating innovative solutions to reduce our environmental impact.

Since 2016 Telespazio UK has benefited from the green energy that Leonardo has procured 100% through renewable energy sources.

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Telespazio UK, as part of the Leonardo Group, is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions and by 2050 across our value chain.

  • From 2018 to 2020, Leonardo UK achieved a 22% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

In order to continue our progress towards reducing our environmental impact, the following emissions reduction targets have been set:

  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 40% by the end of 2025 against a 2018 baseline.

Protecting our planet is the responsibility of us all, therefore the long-term aspirations of Telespazio UK continue to support this goal:

  • Achieving Net Zero by 2030 for Scope 1 and 2 emissions and by 2050 across our value chain.

CARBON REDUCTION INITIATIVES COMPLETED

As part of Leonardo’s estate, Telespazio UK had benefitted from the following environmental management measures and projects that have been completed or implemented since the baseline year of 2018. These significant investments have improved efficiencies and have also contributed to the reduction of our greenhouse gas emissions.

1. LED Lighting and Light-as-a-Service (LaaS)

Over the past few years, Leonardo UK and our facilities management partners have embarked on a massive programme to provide new, modern lighting at Group sites. A key component of this has been to replace traditional lighting solutions with the latest generation of LED lighting systems. This programme has taken place across several sites, greatly improving efficiencies. It has also made a significant contribution to our energy savings targets, but there is more to do. In 2021, Leonardo UK signed a contract with a partner to deliver Light-as-a-Service (LaaS).

2. Electric vehicle charging network

As our employees move to more hybrid and pure electric vehicle usage, Leonardo UK initiated the installation of charging points across the Group’s sites to encourage more zero emissions travel.  These facilities are also available to all staff and visitors by prior arrangement.  Further expansion of charge points is underway as demand for Hybrid and electric vehicles grows.

3. Flexible Working

Our strong flexible working policy and ‘Workplaces for the Future’ initiative, as well as changed working patterns resulting from Covid, give staff increased flexibility over where and how they work; this in turn decreases the need for travel driving a reduction in emissions associated with business travel and employee commute.

CARBON REDUCTION INITIATIVES PLANNED

As we do not have control over our office location, Telespazio UK will work with Leonardo UK as well as other key clients to support their Carbon Reduction initiatives. Moving forward both Telespazio UK and Leonardo UK have an ambitious pipeline of activity to further accelerate the carbon reduction performance. We will support Leonardo UK to implement their further measures to reduce our carbon footprint overall including the following:

1. Environmental Management System

We are working towards ISO 14001 standards for Environmental Management with the ambition to implement this in line with the Telespazio Group by 2035. This system will support the continual improvement of our performance and analysis of environmental standards.

2. Local energy generation

Leonardo UK are pursuing a path to self-generation through investment in Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) enabling them to produce 25% of their own energy by 2030. As a tenant of Leonardo UK, Telespazio UK will support this ambition.

3. Electric vehicle roll-out

In addition to the increased expansion of our charging point’s network, we will encourage our people to move to hybrid and pure electric vehicles through the employee salary sacrifice scheme for low emissions vehicles. This is in addition to Telespazio UK making all executive cars 100% electric by 2030.

4. Waste and Water improvements

All Leonardo UK sites continue to drive a programme of waste reduction with a target to reduce our total waste by 5% and to recycle a minimum of 90% of our non-hazardous waste by 2024. We support Leonardo UK’s targets to reduce water consumption and water discharge by 5% by 2024.

5. Travel

Telespazio UK is committed to reducing the amount of travel employees take to complete their daily and project activities. We are in the process of revising our travel procedures to deliver better management of employee travel, to ensure that digital meetings are prioritised and that lower carbon transport alternatives are selected wherever possible to reduce carbon emissions associated with business travel.

CARBON REDUCTION INITIATIVES FOR THE FUTURE

In the future, we hope to support the implementation of a range of further measures. The current decarbonisation plan sets out a phased approach to future carbon reduction and includes the following measures:

1. Estate Portfolio Strategy

Through the Leonardo UK Facilities Forum, we have successfully worked with our catering suppliers to remove single use plastics from our canteens and vending machines and we intend to continue this process throughout the supply chain wherever possible.

2. Behavioural Change Initiatives

Telespazio UK commits to rolling out a communication campaign open to all staff, which targets actions that individuals can take to help drive a continual review and reduction in our corporate carbon footprint in relation to things like waste, energy use and business travel. Employees will also be supported to look at their own personal carbon footprint and changes that they can make.

3. Digital Infrastructure

Telespazio UK commits to maximising its digital capability to fully support the flexible working policy thus enabling seamless access to applications and systems from any remote location.  In addition, this will further reduce the necessity to travel to specific face-to-face meetings, rather conducting them via digital platforms.
