Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is at the foundation of modern life, but it has a problem – interference, both deliberate and natural (multipath, built environment, etc).
Signals of Opportunity (SOOP) can be used to help. Coming from both terrestrial (such as 5G telecom networks, television radio broadcasts or wi-fi) and satellite-based sources (such as SatComm constellations), SOOP can be tracked to extract data which can be used for Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT). These measurements can then be hybridised with GNSS. Hybridisation of GNSS with SOOP brings many benefits for PNT resilience.
Within MaLASO, Telespazio UK is studying the benefits of using SOOP (both terrestrial and space-based) for navigation and then demonstrating the benefits of utilising SOOP integrated with GNSS using machine learning techniques and hardware designed to provide a mass-market solution in a demanding and challenging outdoor environment.
