COP26

01 November 2021

Telespazio UK participated at COP26 (1-12 November 2021), as part of the Space4Climate stand, showcasing its Earth Observation technologies and expertise that could help address climate change.

Telespazio is a member of Space4Climate, which is a community of UK academic, government and industry organisations with expertise in Earth Observation climate data.

Space4Climate was been chosen, from a selection of exhibitors and events of around 4,000 initial proposals, to showcase the UK’s world-leading expertise in Earth Observation and climate data from space in the Green Zone at COP26, which took place at the Glasgow Science Centre and was open to the public.

Throughout the two-week United Nations Climate Conference, visitors to the Space4Climate stand were treated to a variety of interactive displays to see how Earth Observation works and how we measure, monitor and model our climate from space. There was also the opportunity to discover and explore the informative and interactive PufferSphere® globe.

At COP26, Telespazio UK demonstrated the Climate Risk Index from Space Platform (CRISP), giving visitors the opportunity to learn about how satellite data can help determine the level of climate risk for a location of interest.

We also presented a poster about Monitoring the Australian Gold Coast, along with the video below.

On 10 November, Telespazio contributed to two sessions in the Space & Geospatial Virtual Pavilion, as follows:

  • How space can support the COP framework
    Geoff Busswell
    13:00-13:30
  • Future of Transport
    Geraint Cooksley
    13:00-13:20

TRUTHS Mission

TRUTHS Mission

Telespazio UK is helping to challenge climate change through the Traceable Radiometry Underpinning Terrestrial- and Helio- Studies (TRUTHS) mission, which will develop a satellite to establish an SI-traceable space-based climate and calibration observing system to improve confidence in climate change forecasts.

Sectoral Information System Global Agriculture

Telespazio UK is supporting climate change adaptation and climate resilience through the Global Agriculture Sectoral Information System (SIS) contract, one of the key SIS systems developed under the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) programme.

Digital Twin Earth – Climate Explorer

Telespazio UK is supporting climate change monitoring with satellite Earth Observation (EO) data, artificial intelligence, machine learning and state-of-the-art data assimilation to produce soil moisture and drought metrics that influence agriculture in Africa.

Climate Risk Index from Space Platforms (CRISP)

Telespazio UK and Assimila are part of the Space4Climate Climate Risk Disclosure Task Group, and over the past two years have been exploring how the UK space sector can support the green finance sector in making climate-informed decisions and disclosures.
